On Sunday, Atlanta United hosted D.C. United in front of a full crowd at Bobby Dodd Stadium, marking the club’s third consecutive sell-out at home to kick off its inaugural season. A combined total of 147,230 attended the team’s first-ever home matches, the most by any MLS club through its first three matches in the history of the league. The previous record, held by the L.A. Galaxy, was set in 1996 when they first entered the league and garnered a total of 130,073.
It all started with Atlanta’s inaugural match against New York Red Bulls which drew a crowd of 55,297 on March 5, ranking as the fourth-highest attended soccer match worldwide on the weekend. Two weeks later, the fire wouldn’t simmer as the Saturday afternoon contest against the Chicago Fire would sell out for a second-straight time with 45,922 in attendance. Capacity was – and will continue to be – smaller than the inaugural match due to a scheduled waterproofing renovation at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Eager to see their beloved club again after a four-match road stretch, the home fans gathered on Sunday to produce a third-straight full house with 46,011 at Bobby Dodd Stadium bringing the total to a whopping 147,230
When the league awarded Atlanta an MLS franchise, not many could have expected the type of response, the amount of excitement and the pure passion yielded from the city so far in its three years of existence, and this is just the beginning.
