Season 6 began with a bang!
Atlanta United won last Sunday 3-1 vs Sporting Kansas City in its first-ever MLS Regular Season home opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The club previously hosted an opener at Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2017.
The result also marked the second time in the club’s six-year history that Atlanta United won its MLS opener. The previous time was in 2020 when Atlanta United beat Nashville away 2-1 on Feb. 29.
A total of 67,523 fans attended the match, meaning Atlanta opened its season with the highest attendance of MLS opening weekend. Seattle's loss 0-1 vs Nashville was the second highest attended match in the league's Matchday 1 with 30,013 fans in attendance at Lumen Field.
Sunday's match broke the Top 20 in attendance in MLS history, and it also meant that Atlanta United now holds 21 out of the 24 highest attended matches in league history, including Playoffs (see table below).
The 67,523 supporters also positioned Atlanta United's match as the third-highest attended league match in the world this past weekend, only behind Manchester United's 0-0 draw against Watford (72,000) and FC Barcelona's 4-0 win vs Athletic Club. Note: England's EFL Cup Final (not a league match), between Chelsea and Liverpool was the highest attended match over the weekend.
Atlanta United will travel west next weekend to face Colorado Rapids, but will be back home on Sunday, March 13 to face the new MLS expansion club from the Carolinas. Tickets for that match are already available.
