Major League Soccer today announced that Atlanta United defender Michael Parkhurst was named to the 2017 MLS All-Star Team. The 2017 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target will take place Aug. 2 at Chicago’s Soldier Field when the league’s best take on reigning La Liga and UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid.
Joining the All-Star Fan XI presented by Target, Chicago Fire head coach Veljko Paunović added the following 11 players to the roster:
Goalkeeper (1): Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders FC)
Defenders (5): Michael Parkhurst (Atlanta United), Hernán Grana (FC Dallas), Matt Hedges (FC Dallas), Johan Kappelhof (Chicago Fire), Jelle Van Damme (LA Galaxy)
Midfielders (4): Giovani dos Santos (LA Galaxy), Dax McCarty (Chicago Fire), Ignacio Piatti (Montreal Impact), Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers)
Forwards (1): Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC)
This will be Parkhurst’s fifth MLS All-Star appearance, as the center back was previously selected in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2014. Atlanta’s captain has started all 19 games this season and contributed to four clean sheets. He was also named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 18.
Parkhurst joins teammates Miguel Almirón and Greg Garza on the 2017 MLS All-Star Team. Almirón and Garza were voted to the Fan XI earlier this month.
