ATLANTA - Osvaldo Alonso returned to play for Atlanta United on Saturday, June 10 for the first time since he suffered an ACL injury back in April 2, 2022.
It all came full circle for Alonso, as he suffered the injury 434 days ago during a match away against D.C United, the same team Atlanta United faced on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Alonso came on in the 84th minute of the match replacing Franco Ibarra.
The Cuban midfielder had only played four matches with Atlanta United when he got injured and was cleared to play not long ago, and played 27 minutes with Atlanta United 2, the club's MLS Next Pro team, on June 4 during a 5-0 win vs Inter Miami II.Â
Alonso, an MLS Cup champion with Seattle Sounders joined Atlanta United on December 23, 2021, with high hopes to become a rock in Gonzalo Pineda's midfield. His comeback was received with a big cheer by Atlanta United supporters who roared as he came on to the pitch, and was followed by multiple hugs and congratulations by his teammates and coaching staff.
Atlanta United returns to action on Wednesday, June 21 at home vs New York City FC, following the FIFA international break.
