Zizzo, 30, joins Atlanta United as a veteran of Major League Soccer with more than 160 appearances with four different teams. He began his career with Hannover 96 in Germany’s Bundesliga where he spent three years before returning to the U.S. in 2010. Zizzo provides depth at the fullback position while he is also capable of playing on the wing. A native of San Diego, Calif. Zizzo has one cap with the U.S. Men’s National Team.
2017 (New York Red Bulls): Zizzo played 23 matches, started 18, and recorded two assists. Open Cup: He made five appearances, all starts, in New York’s run to the U.S. Open Cup Final where the team lost to Sporting Kansas City (September 20). He recorded the game-winning assist in extra time in the semifinal match against FC Cincinnati (August 15) to send the Red Bulls to the finals.
2016 (New York Red Bulls): Zizzo played 27 games, making a career-high 20 starts, and contributed two assists. He assisted the game-winning goal FC Dallas (April 29). MLS Playoffs: Zizzo appeared in two playoff matches, starting one. CONCACAF Champions League: He made five CCL appearances, all starts. U.S. Open Cup: Started and played a full 90 in both matches.
2015 (New York Red Bulls): Zizzo played 22 games, making 10 starts, and totaled two assists. His made first start for New York against D.C. United an March 22. He helped New York earn the 2015 Supporters’ Shield. U.S. Open Cup: Zizzo scored a goal in a 4-1 win against New York Cosmos (July 1). He started two of New York’s three matches. MLS Playoffs: Started and played the full 90 minutes in all four MLS Cup Playoff games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. D.C. and Eastern Conference Finals vs. Columbus.
2014 (Sporting Kansas City): Zizzo appeared in 19 games, including 13 starts, and had three assists. CONCACAF Champions League: Zizzo played in one match for the 2013/14 tournament, starting and playing 60 minutes in a 1-0 win over CD Cruz Azul (March 12). He also played two matches in the 2014/15 tournament and scored the final goal in a 3-1 win over Real Estelà FC (Sept. 24).
2013 (Portland Timbers): Zizzo played in 10 games, including two starts and scored one goal in a 2-4 loss to Real Salt Lake (Aug. 30).
2012 (Portland Timbers): Zizzo began his season in May due to his 2012 injury and appeared still managed to set career highs in assists (4) and shots (24) while playing in 20 games and starting 12. He scored his first MLS goal on Aug. 15 vs. Toronto FC in a 2-2 draw. Zizzo recorded his first multi-assist game four days later at New York Red Bulls in a 2-3 loss (Aug. 19).
2011 (Portland Timbers): Zizzo was acquired by Portland Timbers in exchange for allocation money and appeared in 30 games and started in 14. Had three assists in the regular season.
2010 (Chivas USA): Zizzo made MLS debut on Aug. 21 at FC Dallas in a 1-0 loss. He played 10 matches and started once in his first MLS season. Zizzo recorded his first assist on Oct. 23 against Chicago Fire in a 1-4 loss. U.S. Open Cup: Zizzo made one appearance against Seattle Sounders FC, a 1-3 loss in the semifinals (Sept. 1).
2009/10 (Hannover 96): Zizzo made one appearance in Bundesliga play, entering as a substitute and logging 14 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Mainz (Aug. 15). He began the season with Hannover’s reserves where he started seven matches, assisted two goals and scored a hat trick in a 5-0 win over FC Oberneuland (Sept. 2). An ACL injury caused Zizzo to miss majority of the season.
2008/09 (Hannover 96): Zizzo made five substitute appearances with the first team. He made 17 appearances, 16 starts, with the reserves and assisted one goal. Zizzo also made his DFB-Pokal debut when he was subbed on in a 2-0 loss at Schalke 04 (Sept. 23).
2007/08 (Hannover 96): Zizzo made two appearances with the first team. He made his Bundesliga debut on May 10, 2008 at Werder Bremen in a 6-1 loss. Zizzo made 21 appearances with the reserve squad and scored four goals.
COLLEGE: Zizzo played two collegiate seasons at UCLA from 2005-06, earning First Team Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Season and First Team All-Pac-10 honors, along with Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
INTERNATIONAL: Zizzo has one cap with the United States National Team. He made his debut on Aug. 22, 2007 in a friendly against Sweden. Zizzo earned two caps for U.S. U-23 team in 2008. He played in the 2007 U-20 FIFA World Cup and started in all five matches, helping the team reach the quarterfinals. Zizzo began his international career with the United States U-18 Men’s National Team and participated in the Lisbon International Tournament and the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland in 2005.
