One of the most memorable moments of Atlanta United’s incredible first season was when the Five Stripes nation first set the all-time single-match attendance record for an MLS game. More than 70,000 fans packed into Mercedes-Benz Stadium as the upper deck was opened for the first time for a soccer match in Atlanta. Just weeks later ATL UTD fans would fill it again and crack their own record.
You showed up, and the club listened – and now Atlanta United is upping the ante. This year, ATLiens will have twice as many chances to pack Mercedes-Benz Stadium to the rafters in 2018. The club has announced that the stadium will be open in its expanded configuration for four Atlanta United matches this season.
The first game with the open 300-level will be the home opener on Sunday, March 11th at 3:00 p.m. against D.C. United. It’s been a long, cold winter without the Five Stripes on the field, and what better way to get back into the MLS season than standing rowdy and proud with 70,000 of your closest friends as the Atlanta United faithful reunite for another exciting season in 2018.
The club couldn’t let its neighbors down in Florida off easy. The second expanded configuration match will be in the club’s home match against Orlando City, on Saturday, June 30th at 7:00 p.m. Fill the bowl with red, black and gold and prepare to get loud and proud as we reaffirm who the real kings of the south are. Tito the “Lion Tamer” will certainly be ready for the rivalry match.
2018 will be a special year in the soccer world as all eyes turn to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup –– and just moments after the final whistle of the World Cup final, Atlanta United will kick off on the same channel. So to show off the wonder that is the Atlanta United crowd, the third expanded configuration match will be against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday, July 15th, at 2:00 p.m. The soccer world will be watching –– it’s time to show off the sea of red, black and gold to the world.
After the dog days of summer wind down, the focus will turn to getting into form for the final stretch of the season as teams fight for their playoff fate. Last year, September proved to be a month full of hat tricks, epic victories and smashing records. So with that in mind, join 70,000 of your friends to cheer on the Five Stripes and make sure you’re at the fourth match with the open 300-level against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
