Atlanta United 2 lost 2-0 to Ottawa Fury Sunday afternoon at TD Place. Center back Tyler Ruthven returned to the starting lineup after missing more than a month of action due to a hamstring injury.
Ottawa opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Fury FC’s Carl Haworth made an interception in the midfield before dribbling into the 18-yard box where he laid off a pass for Christiano François in the middle of the box who finished a one-time shot into the lower left corner.
Fury FC doubled its lead in the 67th minute through Thomas Meilleur-Giguère. Mour Samb dribbled to the end line on the right side of the penalty area before sending a cross toward the middle of the box. Meilleur-Giguère settled the ball and struck it on a half volley into the left side of the goal.
ATL UTD 2’s attack took control following the second goal and nearly cut the deficit in half in the 70th minute. Moments after both coming on in a double substitution, Alessandro Castro played Yosef Samuel into the left side of the box. The winger sent a ball skipping across the six-yard box where Jackson Conway made a sliding effort at the back post, but his touch drifted just wide of the right post.
Luiz Fernando produced another close chance in the 79th minute when he sent in a cross from the left flank, but the ball bounced in between Conway and Ottawa goalkeeper Callum Irving and rolled out for a goal kick. Fernando again nearly assisted a goal in the 89th minute when he raced toward the end line and cut a ball back to the center of the box for Castro, but the midfielder’s sliding shot was caught by Irving.
ATL UTD 2 (3-4-1, 10 points) returns to action Saturday, May 4 against Nashville SC at 7:30 p.m. EST at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
