ATL UTD 2

Q&A with Jack Gurr

ATLUTD2_JackGurrQ&A

ATL UTD 2 forward Jack Gurr shares what’s in his Netflix queue, the one food from England he wishes were here, and a few of his favorite things.

  • What have you been watching on Netflix?
    • I’ve been watching Making a Murderer. I can’t stop watching that. I’ve only seen maybe 5 or 6 episodes, so I haven’t seen it all yet. There’s just so many times I’m pausing to ask “How could this happen?” “How did they let it get to this point?” I’ve also been watching this new one called The English Game. It’s a famous football tournament in England, the FA Cup. I think they said since 1879, so it’s about how soccer was played at that time when it was just amateur and nobody got paid. It was just the rich people down south. It’s a good watch.
  • What is your favorite color?
    • It would have to be black and white which is the colors of my team Newcastle United. I’ve grown up wearing the stripes and stuff. As far as colors, I’m not too picky but black and white would have to be it.
  • What’s your favorite food?
    • It’s a tough one. My wife’s American but her parents are Mexican, and every Sunday they make a carne asada which is a steak, Mexican-style. They make it every Sunday, so I look forward to that every week. It’s really good. It’s nowhere near what I pictured having when I came to Atlanta but I tried it once and it was amazing. It’s kind of like a routine now.
  • Have you been cooking a lot lately?
    • Ya, I’ve been trying to sharpen up my skills a little bit. My wife’s vegan so she makes a lot of vegan recipes. Some of them I quite like and some of them I think, "No that’s not happening, no chance". I’ve been trying to watch a bit of Gordon Ramsey and try and do a little bit of cooking, but I don’t know how much better you can get to be honest.
  • Do you miss any food from England?
    • I do. I miss a chain called Nando’s which is a Portuguese restaurant chain. It’s basically just chicken and whatever sides that you want. I think they’re starting to bring them over to America, but I think the closest one is 10 hours which I’ve debated a couple of times. It hasn’t gotten that strong yet.
  • What’s your favorite sport to watch besides soccer?
    • It would be the UFC. I’m a big fan of Connor McGregor. He’s Irish, but I watched his film on Netflix and the way he approaches his profession is good for me to see. I like how he overcomes certain obstacles and pushes things to the side. Mentally, he’s just unbreakable which I try to replicate and bring that into my own soccer. Apart from the UFC, I like golf as well. I like watching golf, especially the Master’s. I’ve lived in Georgia for six years now and I still haven’t had a chance to go.
  • Do you have a favorite golfer?
    • A guy called Lee Westwood; he’s English. When I go back over to England, he plays at the same golf course as I do. I don’t think he’s originally from Newcastle, but he plays and created his own course next to the course that I was on. He now plays there when he’s not on the tour. It’s good to go back there. And also heroes like Alan Shearer who’s been my idol since I was little. He’s from Newcastle and he played for Newcastle and England. He plays at the golf course as well. There’s always someone famous playing there.
  • If you weren’t a professional soccer player, what would you be doing?
    • I’d probably be coaching. I’ve been coaching for about 3 years locally in Atlanta for Club USA. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience that I’ve gained over the years with the kids and watching them develop. That’s what I’d love to do because I just love football. Another option would be using my degree. I got my degree in Business Economics. I don’t know if i’d really wanna go down that route; it was just kind of a plan B.
