Career Summary

Atlanta United announced the signing of Matt Edwards to a Homegrown contract through 2025 on June 21, 2024. Edwards joined Atlanta United’s Academy in 2019 before leaving to play at the collegiate level at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Edwards began the 2024 season with Atlanta United 2, where he acted as the team’s captain. He finished the MLS NEXT Pro season with 16 matches played, 15 starts, and one assist. Edwards made his First Team debut in a 3-0 win over Charlotte Independence on May 5 in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, where he started and recorded an assist. Edwards made his MLS debut as a substitute in a road loss at Real Salt Lake on July 6.

Prior to his time with the Tar Heels, Edwards played for Atlanta United’s Academy, joining in 2019 at the U-17 level. The Apex, North Carolina native served as captain of the U-19 side and got his first taste of professional soccer after making eight appearances for ATL UTD 2 during the 2020 USL Championship season.
